Influence of Rapid Composting on the Heavy Metals of Sewage Sludge

The contents and chemical fractionation of Zn,Cu,Ni,Cd,Pb and Cr of Quyang sewage sludge and its compost were determined. The result indicated that the rapid composting process had no influence on the contents of heavy metals, whereas the fractionation of heavy metals changed. Heavy metals of Quyang sewage sludge and its compost mostly existed in immobile fraction. However rapid composting further increased the percentage of immobile fraction. The fraction of Zn, which had a high content, changed significantly. The percentage of mobile fraction decreased from 37% to 16%,therefore the mobility and environmental toxicity of Zn decreased greatly. It could be concluded that the process of rapid composting increased the immobility of all the researched heavy metals and was beneficial to the land use of sewage sludge.
