An Analysis of Drought Event and Its Causation in Jianghuai Region During Summer 2013

This paper conducts a statistical analysis based on 43 meteorological stations in the 1961- 2013 daily and monthly meteorological data from the Jianghuai region. The analyzing results show that the highest temperature and the least precipitation occurred here in summer 2013 overall the past 53 years,and high temperature extremes were observed in 40 stations. The results show that the stronger intensity and further north location of the western Pacific subtropical high directly caused the upper air converging,the lower diverging. The sinking airflow made it hard to rain in Jianghuai region. Under the influence of less water vapor transports from the currents of warm air from the ocean nearby and weaker cold air southward from the Northern China,cold airs difficultly met with the moist and warm water vapor and then caused inadequate rainfalls. At the same time,the positive SSTA in the mid-latitude West Pacific kept the western Pacific subtropical high jumping northward. Comparing with the other droughts during the same time in Jianghuai region,the droughts in summer are mainly related to the western Pacific subtropical high and the westerly jet.
