XPS Studies on the Interaction between Water and the Superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O Films

We prepare screen-printed films of the Y-Ba-Cu-O compound on ZrO_2(100) substrate by solidphase reaction method. The X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy is used to investigate the electronic structure of the Y-Ba-Cu-O films,especially the film degraded by water. The results of XPS indicate that the superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O phase is highly sensitive to water. The binding energies of Y_(3d),Ba_(3d),Cu_(2p) of the degraded film shift to higher energy as compared to undegraded film. This means that the process of Y-Ba—Cu-O film degraded by water is an oxidation process. The aim of our work is to provide an evidence of protecting Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductor and some devices made of this material.
