Progress on enhancement methods for electrokinetic remediation of contaminated soil

Electrokinetic remediation is an emerging green technology which is employed to remove contaminants from soil especially fine-grained soil in-situ. Contaminants are removed primarily through electromigration and electroosmotic advection controlled by a direct-current electric field across the soil. However there are many factors such as soil pH, Zeta potential and soil chemistry which may enhance or retard the cleanup process. In order to improve the remediation efficiency and broaden its application, many enhancement techniques have been developed according to soil types and contaminants characters. This paper has summarized eight enhancement methods that have been used mostly since 1995 which includes acid and alkali neutralization, cation selective membrane, electrodialytic remediation, complexing agents, hydrophobic organic contaminants facilitating agents, redox method, combination bacteria with electrokinetics, the Lasagna technology. In every technique a typical apparatus is listed and its principle of enhancement, advantage as well as application field are discussed. These information offer a good reference for future experimental designs for electrokinetic remediation of contaminated soils.
