Performance of denitrifying phosphate accumulating organisms for domestic wastewater treatment in CASS reactor

The performance of denitrifying phosphate accumulating organisms on removing organics, nitrogen and phosphorus from raw domestic wastewater in a CASS reactor was investigated. After 66 d sludge cultivation with two operation modes of phase I and phase II, the reactor reached steady state. The average removal rate of COD, ammonia, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 90.47%, 95.02%, 84.71% and 99.09%, respectively. Phosphorus release/absorption test was carried out and demonstrated the ratio of DNPAOs to PAOs in sludge achieved 80.00% during stable operation stage. Phosphorus uptake was found proportional to nitrate consumption. High removal efficiency of organic, phosphorus and nitrogen and high enrichment efficiency for denitrifying phosphate accumulating organisms were achieved in the operation mode.
