A Study of the HN-97 Porcelain Stain with Scanning Electron Microscopy

Objective: To study the HN 97 porcelain stain's superficial smooth property and its combination with body porcelain after firing. Methods: Apply a thin slurry of HN 97 porcelain stain powder over the polished Shofu body porcelain surface, and fire it at an autogenous glaze temperature (920 ℃). The surface and sagittal section were viewed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and were compared with those of the Shofu stain. Results: When observation was made by naked eye, surfaces of the two porcelain stains were all smooth. When observation was made by SEM, pittings were seen on the surfaces of two porcelain stains, but pittings of the HN 97 porcelain stain are less than those of the Shofu stain. The combination of the two stains with body porcelain is very good. Conclusion: The HN 97 porcelain stain is smooth on the surface and firm in combination with body porcelain after firing.
