An Analysis of Divers' Psychological Characteristics

YU Hao, YANG Tao, XIAO Wei bing, et al (Naval Medical Research Institute, Shanghai 200433, China)
Objective: To investigate divers' mentality, find out its determining factors and provide a good basis for diver selection. Methods: 8 divers were tested by "combined raven's test (CRT)", "diver's work ability scale", and "verbal memory span test" etc. The results were statistically analysed by SPSS 9.0. Results: "diver's work ability test" has high reliability, which can be used to evaluate divers' work ability. Divers' intelligence quotient was correlated to their memory span and education background. The overall evaluation was significantly correlated to divers' internal characteristics; divers' age and service time in the army were correlated to external characteristics. With the increase of age, one's simple reaction time becomes longer; and with the increase of service time, one's hardworking spirit reduces. Sense of work responsibility was significantly correlated to memory span score. Conclusion: Factors influencing divers' mentality were found out, which may provide a good basis for diver selection.
