The surface and interface of carbon fiber-reinforced soluble PPESK composite

First,this work studied the interfacial properties of higher performance carbon fiber/PPESK thermoplastic composites.The fiber/matrix interface was treated by cold air plasma.The elements on the carbon fibers surface with different plasma treatment time were also examined by XPS.The functionality of the carbon fiber after plasma treatment were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).Contact angle analyses were performed on carbon fibers with different plasma treatment time to well understand the mechanism of adhesion in carbon fiber/PPESK composites.The surface roughness of carbon fibers were analyzed by Atomic force microscopy(AFM).Interlaminar shear strength(ILSS) of the CF/PPESK composite were measured to confirm the optimum plasma treatment conditions.The fracture surfaces of carbon fiber/PPESK composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results show that: The ILSS of carbon fibers/PPESK composites was improved by 13.5% under the optimum plasma treatment conditions of 200W and 15 min.After plasma treatment,interfacial adhesion can be enhanced by improving wet ability,increasing surface roughness and polar functional groups content on the surface,which reinforces the mechanical properties of the composite.
