THE POLICY AND TECHNICAL ROUTING FOR NUCLEAR WASTE AND SPENT FUEL DISPOSAL IN USA

Public concerns over nuclear reactor safety and radioactive waste disposal have slowed accep-tance of nuclear power as a large-scale alternative to fossil fuels. Disposal of spent fuel from com-mercial nuclear power plants is one of the most challenging environmental issues facing Americanstoday.The major issue facing most countries is the selection of a suitable disposal technology and thepolicy,The selection could be affected by various elements.In the United States the responsibility for safety disposal of radioactive waste is shared be-tween the state governments and the federal government.This policy is embodied in three publiclaws that have been enacted since 1980 dealing with high-level and low-level radioactive wasteand spent nuclear fuel.The america radioactive waste management system is the national system to store and disposeof used fuel.The system has three major parts: the monitored retrievable storage(MRS)facilityfor temporary used fuel storage, an underground repository for permanent disposal and a trans-portation system, The key to the success of this program is keeping off the radioactivity in theused fuel until it reaches a safe level.
