Root Growth of Cucumber Seedlings Response to Nitrogen Application Rates and Nitrogen Forms

In order to clarify the relationship between root growth of cucumber seedlings and nitrogen application rates and nitrogen forms,ammonium nitrate phosphorus fertilizer as tested material(NO_3~--N∶NH_4~+-N 0.9∶1.0),apot experiment was employed to determine the effects of different nitrogen(N)application rates and N forms on root growth of cucumber seedlings.The results showed that the root length of cucumber seedlings without N fertilizer was higher than that of N applied treatments.The growth of plant roots was inhibited with N application,and the inhibition was more obvious when N applied at the rate of 100 mg·plant~(-1).Nitrogen fertilizer mainly reduced the root length in the range of 1.0~1.3 mm and 2.3~2.6 mm root diameter.The root length of cucumber seedlings was significantly correlated with the content of mineral N and N forms in the substrate before sowing and at transplanting.Before sowing,when the content of NO_3~--N was at 382 mg·kg~(-1),NH_4~+-N at 373 mg·kg~(-1) and total mineral N at 840 mg·kg~(-1) in substrate significantly reduced root length,and at transplanting,the root length decreased with the content of NO_3~--N increasing,and when the content of NH_4~+-N was 88 mg·kg~(-1) and the total mineral N at 455 mg·kg~(-1),the inhibition of root length was the highest.When the NO_3~--N/NH_4~+-N ratio before sowing was 10.7,the root length was the highest,and NO_3~--N/NH_4~+-N ratio at transplanting was 3.8,the root growth was inhibited significantly.
