Clinical Observation on the Effect of Respiration Exercise on Respiratory Function After Lung Volume Reduction Surgery

Objective To explore the effect of respiration exercise on respiratory function after lung volume reduction surgery. Methods Twenty-seven cases of unilateral or bilateral lung volume reduction surgery were divided into an exercise group (n=12) and a control group (n=15). The control groups were using traditional method before the operation, while the patients in the exercise group were asked to perform respiration exercise before the surgery, including deep and slow abdominal respiration, half-closed lip respiration and coughing,etc. The control groups were using traditional method the patients were compared in terms of the interval from the time when the patients were on breathin apparatus and the time when they were off the machine after the operation, pre- and postoperative results of blood gas analysis and lung functions.Results The interval of the exercise group was significantly shorter than that of the control group (P0.05). Blood gas results and lung functions were greatly improved after surgery in the exercise group (P0.01 for all). There were significant differences in the results of blood gas analysis and lung functions between the exercise group and the controls 3 and 6 months after the operation (P0.05 for all). Conclusion The regular respiration exercise before surgery can improve the respiratory function after lung volume reduction surgery.
