Eliminating Exceptional Elements in Manufacturing Cell Design

Recently several papers proposed different methods for evaluating machine utilization inmanufacturing cell design, most of these works assumed to deal with a network model, with intercelltransfers as predefined parameters. This paper analyses the action of intercell transfers conceptwhen dealing with EE, focusing on their interdependency, thus leading to a reduction problem whosecomplexity can be higher than that often depicted in the literature. Besides, some difficulties in subcon-tracting for eliminating EE are discussed. Finally, on the basis of manufacturing experience, the paperpresents a new systematic and practical method for eleminating EE by duplicating machines.
