ANALYSIS OF STRESS CONCENTRATIONS OF UNIDIRECTIONAL COMPOSITES CONSIDERING THE MATRIX STIFFNESS

This paper proposes a modified shear lag model accounting for the effect of the tensile stiffness of the matrix, which can be used for studying the stress redistribution due to the failure of fibers or matrix of unidirectionally fiber reinforced composites, discusses quantitatively the influence of the stiffness ratio of matrix to fiber and of the fiber volume fraction on the stress concetrations in the fibers and matrix adjacent to the fracture and proves that the influence of the tensile stiffness of the matrix on the stress concentration can be neglected when the matrix stiffness is low (such as polymer matrix composites) and the volume fraction of fibers is high. For the other cases, such as ceramic and metal matrix composites, the tensile stiffness of the matrix can not be neglected in the shear lag analysis.
