Effects of Planting Density on Biological Traits and Density-Tolerance Analysis for Maize Inbred Lines

To elucidate the effects of planting density on biological traits and density-tolerance analysis for maize inbred lines,twelve maize inbred lines of different groups were studied. They were cultivated at the density of 105 000 plants/ha and 180 000 plants/ha respectively. Treatments were arranged in a split-plot design with three replicates. The results indicated that the effects of density on silking stage,silkingpowder period,leaf area,stem rot rate,bare plant rate,stem puncture,stem breaking,ear length,ear rows and yield per plant were significant or extremely significant,while the effects on powder stage,plant height,lodging,rust and bold tip length were not significant. Combined with dense coefficient of resistance analysis,three density-resistant and three density-sensitive inbred lines were selected. Density-tolerance coefficient combined with silking-powder period,bare plant rate and yield per plant could provide the reference indicator for prediction of the density tolerance of maize.
