A STUDY OF THE EMBRYONIC, LARVAL AND JUVENILE DEVELOPMENT OF CLARIAS LAZERA

Clarias lazera, a freshwater catfish,was first introduced from Egypt into Guangdong Province, China in 1981. A study of its embryonic, larval and juvenile development is presented. Fertilized eggs are sticky and spheroidal in shape. It is 1 .23-1 .36 mm in diameter. The egg size is in proportion to the female fish. At the water temperature, of 26.4-29.2℃, most,of the fertilized eggs hatched out in 23 hours and 45 minutes. The body of newly hatched larva is 3.12-3.62 mm in total length,and 8 -10 + 30-34 somites can be seen clearly. It takes 13-15 days for the newly hatched larva to grow into juvenile at the water temperature of 55- 33℃.About 2-3 days after hatching,the larvae start eating. 13-15 days after hatching, the young fish is fully developed in external morphology. Clarias lazera is somewhat different other catfish. Clorias fuscus, C. batrachus in the egg, embryo and larva. The development of intestine and gills is given. Acoording to the data collected, the formula of relations between hatching time and hatching temperature may be expressec as T = 304.335 - 9.568 C ( r = 0.9983r0.01 =0.8010r0.05 = 0.5529 ) .The favourable water temperature for early development of Clarias lazera is 20-35℃, while 23-32℃ is the optimum.
