Concern for the Fate of the Study of Folklore Culture and Folklore Against the Background of the Protection of the Non-material Heritage

Tian Zhaoyuan
Lists of the national non-material cultural heritage are classified according to the catalogues of folklore. Subjects in the folklore are becoming the mainstream of the non-material cultural heritage. However, illogicalities arise in cataloguing the national non-material cultural heritage:confusion of varieties. For example, folklore is a concept with a wide range of meaning, while it is listed in a rather small catalogue, which may bring about the misunderstanding about the concept of folklore. Thereby the protection in some way hurts the folklore culture and the study of folklore. In this thesis, the writer maintains the idea that the cultural significance is more important than the cataloguing of the protections of the non-material cultural heritage, and that the protection of the non-material cultural heritage is only a branch of folklore, and that the study of folklore is the guarantee for culture construction as well as a project of vital and lasting importance for discipline development. Only when the protection of non-material cultural heritage and the study of folklore are treated as two sides of a coin and they can promotion the development of each other, can they exert the positive influence on the cultural construction in China.
