Naphthalimide-based Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of Hg~(2+) and Cu~(2+)

A novel fluorescent probe(NDS) based on 1,8-naphthalimide with di-sulfamine groups as binding sites is developed for the detection of Hg~(2+) and Cu~(2+). In ethanol solution,NDS exhibits highly selective fluorescent turn-on response for Hg~(2+) and fluorescent turn-off response for Cu~(2+). Other metal ions including heavy and transition metal ions have no effect on the detection of Hg~(2+) and Cu~(2+). Cu~(2+) can quench the fluorescence of NDS,but it cannot affect the Hg~(2+)-induced fluorescence. ESI-MS analysis indicates a 1∶1 stoichiometry for the complexes between NDS and Cu~(2+)/Hg~(2+). The sulfamide releases a hydrogen ion that is crucial for the coordination between NDS and Cu~(2+)/Hg~(2+).
