A study of esophageal transmucosal potential difference in vivo

Xue Lexun, et al Henan Medical Institute
Because many diseases of the esophagus, such as esophagitis, carcinomaand Barrett's esophagus, may involve the esophageal mucosa, a sensitiveand accurate method to evaluate its integrity would be of value. The tech-nique for measuring the transmucosal electrical potential difference(PD)of the esophagus has been developed. To determine if the PD measurementsof the esophagus are of use for diagnosing esophageal diseases, we recordedthe esophageal PDs of the normal esophagus and of experimental acute eso-phagitis in the rabbits. Mean PDs in the proximal, middle and distal por-tions of the normal esophagus in the rabbits were -27mv. -28mv and-25mv.respectively; the results were similiar to those reported by Turner et al.The PDs of the inflammatory esophagus were far lower than those of thenormal one (P0.001). The results of this investigation suggest that themeasurements of PD may be a safe, simple, rapid and sensitive method ofdetecting the presence of esophageal mucosal damage.
