Assessment of right ventricular function by single cardiac cycle real-time threedimensional echocardiography before and after percutaneous closure for atrial septal defect

Objective To evaluate right ventricular function by single cardiac cycle real-time three-dimensional echocardiography in adult patients with atrial septal defect(ASD) before and after transcatheter closure in order to assess the utility of standard two-dimensional parameters.Methods Thirty-five ASD patients and 32 healthy controls received single cardiac cycle real-time three-dimensional echocardiography before and 6 months after transcatheter closure.Results Three-dimensional right ventricular ejection fraction,three-dimensional right ventricular end diastolic volume,three-dimensional right ventricular end systolic volume,right ventricular end diastolic area,right ventricular end systolic area and right ventricular fractional area change were significantly higher in ASD group than those in control group before closure(P0.05),and were lower 6 months after closure than those before closure(P0.05).Conclusion Single cardiac cycle real-time three-dimensional echocardiography imaging gives useful insights in the quantitative assessment of right ventricular function in ASD patients before and after closure.
