Value of ultrasonic elasticity imaging and conventional ultrasonography to the diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules

Objective To explore the value of ultrasonic elasticity imaging and conventional ultrasonography to the diagnosis of thyroid benign and malignant thyroid nodules.Methods The ultrasonic elasticity imaging and conventional ultrasonography characteristics were retrospectively analyzed in 38 patients(49 thyroid nodules).The diagnostic accuracy was compared between ultrasonic elasticity imaging and conventional ultrasonography on basis of gold standard of operation pathological results.Results In 49 thyroid nodules,40 were benign nodules including 24 of elastography rating stage 1,10 of stage 2,4 of stage 3,and 2 of stage 4;and the other 9 were malignant nodules including 3 of stage 1,4 of stage 3 and 5 of stage 5.With a cutoff value of elastography rating ≥4,the sensitivity,specificity and accuracy of the ultrasonic elasticity imaging for thyroid malignant tumor were 88.9%,95.0%,and 93.9%,and of conventional ultrasonography for benign and malignant nodule were 75.0%,80.4%,and 79.6%,which showed significant differences(P0.05).Conclusion Ultrasonic elasticity imaging is helpful to improving the diagnostic accuracy of malignant and benign thyroid nodules.
