Effect of moxibustion pretreatment at different time points in relieving exercise-induced fatigue in rats: an experimental study

Objective: To investigate the effect of moxibustion pretreatment at different time points in relieving exercise-induced fatigue. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into group A( blank group),group B( model group),group C( moxibustion pretreatment + model group),group D( immediate moxibustion + model group),and group E( model + immediate moxibustion group). The rats in group A were tied up to the fixing plate for 15 minutes every day. Within the first seven days,the rats in group C were treated at the acupoints at one side for 15 minutes every day,and those in the other groups were tied up to the fixing plate for 15 minutes every day. Within the next seven days,the rats in groups B,C,D,and E received swimming training to establish the model of exercise-induced fatigue; the rats in group D were treated at the acupoints at one side for 15 minutes every day at 1 hour before exercise,and those in group E were treated at the acupoints at one side for 15 minutes every day at 1 hour after exercise; swimming endurance was recorded every day. Venous blood was collected in each group to measure and compare the serum levels of lactic acid,superoxide dismutase( SOD),and γ-aminobutyric acid. Results: The model group had a significantly increased SOD compared with the blank group,the group with moxibustion pretreatment and the model group had a significantly increased SOD,and among the group with pretreatment at one week before exercise,the group with immediate moxibustion pretreatment,and the group with moxibustion treatment after exercise,the group with pretreatment at one week before exercise had the highest level of SOD,followed by the group with immediate moxibustion pretreatment and the group with moxibustion treatment after exercise( all P 0. 05). Pretreatment at one week before exercise achieved significant improvement in exercise endurance and reduction in GABA( both P 0. 05). Compared with the other groups,the group with immediate pretreatment after exercise had a significantly more improvement in lactate metabolism( P 0. 05). Conclusion: Pretreatment in advance or immediate pretreatment reduces the serum level of SOD after exercise,helps the lactate metabolism in blood,and reduce the plasma level of GABA; pretreatment at one week before exercise has greater effects on SOD and GABA,and can delay the occurrence of exercise-induced fatigue and improve exercise capacity in rats; immediate pretreatment can relieve accumulation of lactate acid after exercise.
