“The spirits of five viscera”and vascular dementia

Vascular dementia is a clinical syndrome caused by cerebrovascular lesions,with major manifestations of memory and cognitive impairment. Traditional Chinese medicine thinks that this syndrome is caused by insufficiency of marrow- sea and mental dysfunction and has major manifestations of dullness and amnesia. Most medical experts discuss this disease from the perspective of kidney,but in clinical syndrome differentiation,many viscera and bowels are involved. Five viscera store five spirits and control five minds,and are closely related to mind diseases. This article starts from the unique theory of "spirits of five viscera"in traditional Chinese medicine and analyzes the etiology and pathogenesis of vascular dementia based on the physiology of five viscera,in order to provide new thoughts for the clinical treatment of this disease.
