Effect of total flavonoids of galangal in lowering uric acid

Objective: To investigate the effect of total flavonoids of galangal on mice with hyperuricemia. Methods:Mice were divided into groups and were treated with high-,medium-,and low-dose total flavonoids of galangal(500,250,and 125mg/kg),allopurinol(40 mg/kg),and benzbromarone(20 mg/kg),respectively,by gavage for 8 consecutive days. A mouse model of hyperuricemia was established by intraperitoneal injection of oteracil potassium(model A) or hypoxanthine(model B) after last administration,and the content of uric acid(UA) in serum and xanthine oxidase(XOD)in the liver were measured. Results: High-,medium-,and low-dose total flavonoids of galangal significantly reduced the content of UA in serum and the activity of XOD(P 0. 05),and high-dose total flavonoids had the greatest effect in reducing UA and inhibiting XOD(P 0. 01). Conclusion: Total flavonoids of galangal can reduce the serum level of UA in mice with hyperuricemia by uric acid excretion and inhibition of the generation of UA.
