On the Third Signal

The first signal refers to a concrete sensible object and its stimulus.The second signal is the signal of the first signal,including linguistic,literal and symbolic signals representing those concrete sensible objects.As an effective tool of mankind,the second signal makes it possible for mankind to record,pass down and develop science and technology or human civilization,which distinguishes human being from other living creatures.The third signal is the signal of the second,which is used to compress the amount of the second signals,enlarge the storage space for the second signals and increase the speed of information communication.It improves work efficiency greatly.This text focuses on the third signal,concerning the relations between the three signals,the methods of creating and developing the third signals which should be based on some basic principles,such as being short,clear,symbolic,recognizable and summary.
