Gangster Films of Hong Kong: Ethics of Biography,Narrative Exposing the Dark and the Hong Kong Spirit
Gangster films(Xiaoxiong pian), biographies of evil people, continue with the basic prototype elements of the black gangster films in Hong Kong while, at the same time, keeping a delicate balance between authentic biography and the fu nny and the adventurous, the entertainment combining authenticity and plot as a whole having become a unique ethics of biography for them. Although the gangster films play with history and ignore politics of nationality and ethnicity, their representational methods of characters form a vast commonwealth of narrative, bearing the collective memory of the 1950 s and 1960 s for the Hong Kong people, in a way that is similar to the Black Curtain Fiction(Heimu xiaoshuo)in the early days of the Republic of China in exposing the dark in that they, in telling of a city-based legend, are intending to affirm the Hong Kong spirit of the ordinary people living at the lowest rung of the social ladder who are trying indefatigably to become part of the mainstream by exposing the huge black curtain that hangs over the city. Although the gangster films are not fully equipped with the moral consciousness of alerting the people, they imaginatively make up for the frustrations individuals face in their struggles.
