Division Criterion and Definition of Regional Concrete Catastrophic Drought Disaster: A Case of Shanxi Province since Ming & Qing Dynasty

Based on local documents, official archives of Qing dynasty, Min'guo newspaper and contemporary data including water resources, agricultural and weather data, this thesis discusses the division method of drought disaster degree of Shanxi province since Ming Qing dynasty. That is to divide it by rating from up to down choosing county as basal analyzing unit. Then, this thesis advances the concept of the concrete catastrophic drought disaster, and discusses its division criterion. Otherwise, this thesis also defines the beginning and ending year of concrete catastrophic drought disaster of Shanxi province since Ming Qing dynasty. The result shows that from Ming Qing dynasty to the year 2000, there had been 6 concrete catastrophic drought disasters, which happened in 2 years of every 3 years, and in which there were extreme drought disaster in 12 years, great drought disaster in 50 years, medium drought disaster in 114 years and normal drought disaster in 214 years.
