Key Techniques for Implementation of Virtual Underwater Digital Terrain in Digital Ocean Systems

One of the important components of digital earth system is the digital ocean in which the implementation of virtual underwater digital terrain is proved a crucial technique.However,the conventional GIS software like ArcGIS does not provide some key functions for the establishment of digital ocean systems in large area.This paper discusses several critical methods for implementing underwater digital terrain models,including the dual transformation in digitizing,the DEM generating method based on depth contours,and the three-dimensional terrain rendering on the base of spherical surfaces.Taking example for the development of the Digital South China Sea system,the techniques proposed in the paper are well validated.
