Preliminary Studies on Potential Employment of High Energy Shock Waves in Management of Cancer

Based on the imformation that high energy shock waves (HESW) might have biological effects on living cells , Potential of HESW employed in management of malignant tumors was explored in this study.HESW showed both cytotoxicity and disruption on viable tumor cells in suspensions . When in vitro solid tumors were used as targets, though little, if any disruption could be observed, HESW caused Progressive pathogenic damages, i.e. , from degeneration to necrosis . The magnitude of effects above was correlated with numbers of HESW impulses. Studies in vivo showed that HESW significantly retarded the growth of tumors in syngeneic costs , with more than half (50%～80%) of tumors regressed completely, and prolonged the life span of rats with tumor . These results therefore indicate that HESW might be a promising treatment for cancer.
