PHYTOLITH AND ITS PALEOENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE IN AEOLIAN LOESS OF SHENGSHAN ISLAND OF THE EAST CHINA SEA

It is certified by the IRSL dating that the aeolian deposition in Shengshan Island of the East China Sea occurred from (48.1±4.5) kaBP to (15.2±1.5) kaBP.Records of phytoliths in 27 samples from the aeolian section on the island contribute a lot to the knowledge of the evolution of the vegetation in eastern China and the environment changes during the last glacial period.Among the various types of the phytoliths,the cold type is the main part.This reveals that the weather condition at that time in this region was very cold.With the system analysis we can conclude that during the low sea level period in the East China Sea,the bottom of the sea was exposed and displaying a grass-growing landscape.And at the same time the climate was unstable.There were several fluctuations during this period from the phytoliths records.Three statistic methods are used to analyze the phytolith records,and it is found that there are 7 different climate and environment stages in the aeolian deposition section.These 7 stages reveal the vegetation evolution during the last glacial period.Compared with previous analysis results for phytolith in late Pleistocene hard clay layers in the Yangtze River Delta,it is found that phytolith assemblages in loess section of the Shengshan Island and in the hard clay of the Yangtze River Delta represent grass-growing environment and show a series of climatic cold-warm changes.Therefore,it can be further proven that both loess in the East China Sea islands and hard clay in the Yangtze River Delta were products of aeolian deposition of last glaciation in late Pleistocene.
