CHARACTERISTICS OF SURFACE TEXTURES OF QUARTZ IN THE WAVE-CUT NOTCH IN THE FILDES PENINSULA OF ANTARCTICA AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE

Relative frequency distributions of various surface texures recorded in quartz grains can indicate the transportational history and depositional environment.In this paper,surface texture analysis of quartz grains from a wave-cut notch in the Fildes Peninsula was performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM)to identify different types of textures and to give their transportational and depositional environment.Relative frequency distributions of the various surface textures recorded in quartz grains indicate that sediments deposited in the goe had the same or similar transportational history and depositional environment.From improved environmental grain percentage method,it is shown that those microtextures from glacial and fluvial environment have a considerable overlap in the types of surface textures,as might be expected in this system where sediment had been transported by glacier.A detailed investigation of quartz surface texture suggests that the thickness of ice transporting the goe sediments was thin,and the distance of transport by glacier is very finite.All the above information indicates that all the sediments in the goe was generated in a glaciofluvial depositional environment.Based on the transportational history and sedimentary environment of the goe sediments,it is known that the age of the glacier retreating process in the Fildes Peninsula was earlier than 4 600 aBP.
