THE ABSENCE OF THE LASCHAMP EXCURSION IN THE MANGSHAN LOESS SECTION AND ITS CAUSE OF FORMATION

Rock magnetic investigation of the Mangshan loess shows strong similarity to that of the Loess Plateau.Palaeomagnetic measurements reveal that there is no Laschamp excursion recorded in the Mangshan loess section. When heated to 300 ℃,the relative intensity of the samples shows positive correlation with the frequency dependent susceptibility.Therewith we render the knowledge of the partially chemical remanence origin for the Mangshan loess. The remnant magnetization(RM)of loess and paleosol consists of depositional and chemical remnant magnetization(DRM and CRM).Their relative contributions to the RM determine the influence of the "smoothing"effect on the magnetic record of loess and paleosols. The contribution of DRM and CRM to the RM varies with the degree of pedogenesis,i.e.stronger pedogenesis generates more CRM contribution. The reason why the Laschamp excursion is not recorded in the section is also discussed.
