STRATIGRAPHIC DIVISION OF THE SALA US FORMATION AND THE INFERRED SEDIMENTARY ENVIRONMENT

Based on the stratigraphic subdivision,age dating and the analysis of the sedimenta-ry facies,the Sala Us Formation and its palaeoclimate significance is studied.Our results indicated:(1) The Sala Us Formation located in the southeastern part of the Mu Us Desert can be divided into 17 layers according to the lithology characteristics.(2)The age of the Sala Us Formation lasted from Middle Pleistocone to Holocene,so the Malan loess deposited during Late Pleistocene can be only compared with part of it. (3)The upper part of the Sala Us Formation(above layer 8)deposited during thelast glacial-interglacial cycle. In this time interval,the climatic curves can be comparedwith the aeolian sand-loess-palaeosol sequence of the same region and also with the ma-rine delta ￣(18)O records. Therefore the sedimentary sequence of Sala Us Formation is theresponse to climatic changes in the past.
