GEOLOGICAL IMPLICATION OF COASTLINE FRACTAL DIMENSION

Feng Jinliang (Institute of Geography,Hebei Academy of Sciences,Shijiazhuang,050011,China) Zheng Li (Hebei Institute of Mechano Electric Engineering,Shijiazhuang,050054,China)
Since B.B.Mandelbrot published his paper “How long is the coast of Britain, statistical self similarity and fractional dimension”in Science in 1967,the fractal geometry is forging rapidly ahead. As a subject or a new theory, controversy is carrying on about the fractal geometry itself and its application. In the course of fractal geometry study of the northwest coastline of the Bohai Bay,authors not only described natural features of coastline with fractal geometry, but also probed into the geological and physical significance of coastline fractional dimension, such as the relation between erosion, silting and coastline fractional dimension and the relation between structural setting and coastline fractional dimension.
