The osmotica and their contributions to the osmotic adjustment in the Kandelia candel(L.) Drue and Avicennia marina (Forsk) Vierh growing in the Fuian Jiulongiiang fover Estuarywere studied. The resuits show that the contribution of inorgatiic osmotica to the total osmoticadustment was greater than organic osmotica, the contribution of inorganic osmotica being 87.8%and 87.4% respechvely, in K candel and A marina and the organic osmohca being only l2.2% andl2.6%, respectively. Among the inorganic osmotica the contribution of Na+ and C1 - was dominant,then K+, whilst the contributions of Ca=+, Mg= + and NO, were all much smaller. Among theorganic osmotica, the soluble sugars made the most contribuhon, accounhng fOr lo.9% and l l.2% ofthe total osmotic adjustment respectively in K candel and A marina, but the free amino acids andorganic acids made much less contribution. In addition, the calculated osmotic adjustlnent abilities inthe two mang1'ove species, according to the analyzed concentrahons of inorgahic and organic osmotica,were less than the actually measured ones, indicating that there were some other unknown osmoticawhich made contribute to the total osmotic adjustment to some extent.
