A NUMERICAL MODEL OF TIDES IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA BY ADJOINT METHOD

Assimilated the data, which from TOPEX/Poseidon satellite altimeter data (248 periods lasting six years) in the South China basing upon orthogonal response method, into tides model by using adjoint method. Optimal open boundary conditions and bottom friction coefficient were given, the cotidal charts for m 1 and M 2 as well. Compared with the result from the data of 59 tide gauge stations, the average absolute error for m 1 constituent between the computed and the observed harmonic constants are 4.8cm and 8.7° for amplitudes and phase lags respectively, there are 4.3cm and 11° for M 2 constituent. The results in the numerical simulation coincide with tide gauges. It shows that the method is valid.
