Biomechanical study on single vs.double fusion cage combined with pedicle screw internal fixation in degenerative lumbar scoliosis

Objective To analyze and evaluate the biomechanical stability properties of single vs.double fusion cage combined with pedicle screw internal fixation,so as to provide theoretical basis in clinical strategy of single cage combined with pedicle screw fixation in degenerative lumbar scoliosis.Methods Twelve porcine spinal instability models were prepared and randomized into two groups: experimental group using single cage combined with pedicle screw fixation;control group using double cage combined with pedicle screw fixation.The three-dimensional motion of degenerative lumbar scoliosis specimens was tested in intact state,instability state and fusion state.The range of motion was determined.Results There was no significant difference in all stability indexes between two groups in intact state(P0.05).There was significant difference in all stability indexes in instable state compared with the intact state in both two groups(P0.05 or P0.01).After lumbar interbody fusion,both the single and double cage combined with pedicle screw fixation could improve the biomechanical stability of the spine(P0.05 or P0.01),and there was no statistically significant difference in spinal stability capacity between two groups(P0.05).Conclusion The single cage combined with pedicle screw fixation can improve the biomechanical stability of the spine as well as the double cage combined with pedicle screw fixation.
