Requirement analysis for electro-optical detectors in early warning of prompt global strike (PGS) weapons

The method of calculating the earth′s curvature limited maximum detectable range for prompt global strike(PGS)weapons based on near-earth space environment in ideal conditions was presented.The radiation values of PGS in shortwave infrared(SWIR)and solar blind ultraviolet(UV)waveband were estimated according to blackbody radiation theory.When PGS′s flight velocity is more than 5 Mach number,its radiation peak wavelength falls within the range of SWIR,and it is best suitable for application of a SWIR sensor.The PGS′s UV radiant energy is very much smaller compared with that in SWIR,but its UV radiation photon number is still a very huge value.SWIR and solar blind UV avalanche photodiodes with single photon counting capability perhaps have the potential to realize the maximum detectable range.
