Spatio-Temporal Evolution and Correlation Analysis of Road Network Accessibility and Economic Contact in Wuhan Metropolitan Area

Traffic accessibility does great importance to the economic contact and development of urban areas. With data from 1995, 2005, and 2015, using space syntactic variables and gravity model, this paper investigated the spatio-temporal evolution of accessibility and economic contact of cities in Wuhan metropolitan area, and the relevance between the two aspects. We found that: 1) During study period, the accessibility of road network in Wuhan metropolitan area tended to be perfect, but space polarization did exist, showing a structure of center-marginal around Wuhan; 2) Economic contact between cities continued to strengthen, at municipal scale, the economic radiation function of Wuhan and the economic contact between adjacent cities were obvious, at county scale, counties along the Yangtze River Economic Belt contacted more; 3) Since 2005, there was a notable relevance between the accessibility pattern and economic contact pattern of cities at different scales, and it indicated that the improvement of road network accessibility played an important role in promoting the strengthen of economic contact and improving the central position of cities in the region, and it also strengthened the spatial heterogeneity of regional economic contacts.
