Spatial Evolution of Rural Settlement Land and Its Optimization Countermeasures in Xiamen City in 1986-2016

This study calculated spatial clustering and correlation dimensions of rural settlement land in Xiamen. Based on the fractal dimension method, the evolvement process of the rural settlement land structure between 1986 and 2016 was respectively analyzed from city and sub-town perspective; after that, we proposed several countermeasures for optimizing the spatial structure of rural settlement land. The results showed that, the spatial aggregation dimension of rural settlement land in Xiamen increased over time, while the spatial association dimension showed a decreasing trend;meanwhile the spatial relevancy of rural settlement land gradually increased, and the spatial structure showed a multicenter aggregation state. At the sub-township scale, there were significant differences in the relevance of spatial structure of rural settlement land and the accessibility of traffic. Overall, the spatial structures and transportation accessibilities varied among towns. Based on the analysis of the differences of the fractal characteristics of the rural settlement land use space, we divided the rural settlement land into the dominant development zone, the spatial optimization zone, the traffic network optimization zone, the space structure and transportation network optimization zone, as well as the restricted development zone; and proposed corresponding optimization strategies. This study indicated that, the partition characteristics and evolution trend of spatial structure in the optimization areas should be considered during land use planning. Furthermore, the reasonable size of settlement should also be taken into consideration during the optimization of rural settlement land, thereby ensuring the efficiency, integrity and convenience of the public service facilities and infrastructures. Besides, the versatility of rural evolution and the improvement of rural environmental quality of life should be simultaneously considered. Only by doing so could we ensure reasonable disposition of the rural settlement space and optimize spatial structure.
