THE DILEMMA AND THE OUTLET OF MACAO'S EXPORT PROCESSING INDUSTRY

Hu Tiancun(Hong Kong and Macao Research Centre of Zhongshan University, Guangzhou 510275)
Characterized by labour-intensive industries such as textile industry, toy industry, Macao's export processing industry is now in a very difficult position, because of the loss of its adveantage in low cost and keen competition with the new developing Asian countries like China since the late 1980's. in developing export processing industry, Macao has wide international economic connection and is highly export-orientated, but it cannot be compared with the Zhu River delta zone in terms of low cost and low price, A practical way out of the dilemma to a good prospect for Macao's export processing industry is to form a economic and information center of the Zhu River delta zone and furthermore, the west of south China, basing itself on a strengtened coopration and mutual replenishment with the Zhu River delta economic zone according to comparative advantage principle, and taking advantage of the zone's low cost and low price while giving full play to its own wide international connections particularly the economic relations with the Latin American countries to expand its market.
