Objectives: To evaluate the clinical effects and safety of tinidazole in the treatment of peridontal abscess and pericoronitis. Methods: Forty three patients with peridontal abscess or pericoronitis were treated with tinidazole, and 41 patients with peridontal abscess or pericoronitis were treated with metronidazole as control. Clinical and chemical examinations were carried out before or after the treatment, and the MIC of tinidazole and metronidazole were determined in samples of positive anaerobic culture. Results: For patients with peridontal abscess, the effective rates in the tinidazole group and metronidazole group were 94% and 64% respectively, for patients with periconitis, they were 100% and 81%. The clinical effect of tinidazole was significantly better than that of metronidazole ( P 0.05). The MIC of tinidazole group was not different from that of metronidazole group ( P 0.05). There was little side effects from the use of tinidazole. Conclusions: Tinidazole is an effective and safe anti anaerobic medicine which is an alternative to metronidazole.
