Whether tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)influences the proliferation of rat FRTL5cells has not been certified. We used tetrazolium salt(MTT)colorimetric assay to study the effects of TNF-αon the proliferation of FRTL-5cells.When the cells were cultured in 5H(TSH-free)medium,neither proliferative responses of FRTL-5 cells induced by TNF-α(from 200 kU/L to 20 000 kU/L)were found, nor were the cytolytic effects of TNF-αHowever,in 6H medium(containing TSH),the proliferative responses of cells to TSH were moderately inhibited by TNF-αin the levels from 200 kU/L to 30 000 kU/L,and there were no differences between the different dose groups. It suggested that the inhibitory effects of TNF-αmight be due to inhibition of the responses of FRTL5 cells to TSH.
