Numerical simulation of non-penetrating penetration of UHMWPE soft body armor

To research the failure mode of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber(UHMWPE)soft body armor under the non-penetrating penetration effect of a 9 mm pistol bullet,a finite element model of the body armor is built by orthogonal anisotropic constitutive model with damage in LS-DYNA.The simulation results show that the failure mode obtained by the finite element simulation is similar to the test result and the UHMWPE composite has excellent bullet-proof capability.The numerical simulation method is effective to the evaluation and prediction of bullet-proof capability and failure mode.
