Finite element analysis on weld strength and fatigue of fuel tank bracket

The finite element analysis on the weld strength and fatigue of the T-type welded joints in a diesel locomotive fuel tank bracket is performed. When the penetration depth is 2,3,and 5 mm( full penetration) respectively,the finite element calculation results of the stress of the bracket with or without weld are compared with the calculation results obtained by the traditional method. The results indicate that the maximum stress of the whole bracket in the full penetration model is smaller than that calculated by the traditional method in the model without weld,which show that the full penetration structure has better connection performance. When the weld is fully penetrated,the nodal stress distribution of the weld shows that nodal stress is larger in the geometrical sections with abrupt changes. The fatigue calculation results show that the fuel tank bracket can meet the fatigue strength requirement.
