A Glimpse of the Poetic World of Yu Xiusun of the Late Qing Dynasty

Yu Xiusun,second daughter of Yu Yue and wife of Xu Youshen,is a poetess of the late Qing Dynasty. 75 of hers poems remain with us but have received little academic attention today. Under the influence of both the social environment in the late Qing Dynasty and her family,Yu Xiusun applied her talent to a fruitful and excellent literary career. This article analyzes the literary influences she received and the diverse themes and techniques of her art in order to have a glimpse into her experience as poetess from her bureaucratic family background in the late Qing Dynasty as well as into the general characteristics of the female literary creation of the late Qing Dynasty with similar backgrounds.
