Interpretation of the Theme of the English Novel North and South from a Composite Perspective

Li Ran;Foreign languages institute of Nanjing Normal University;Nanjing Foreign Language School Hexi Junior High School;
Elizabeth Geisker's North and South contrasts the economically backward south with the industrialized north,describing the great differences between the beautiful pastoral life of the South and the Industrial revolution in the north,which deeply characterize the many changes and conflicts caused by the British Industrial Revolution( including Labour struggles,Conflict of beliefs and values). It has something in common with Mary Barton,reflecting the author's insight into social problems and his willingness to promote mutual understanding and reconciliation among different social classes. As an outstanding woman writer,Gaskell always pays close attention to the living conditions of women in her works,and to the social status and consciousness of women in industrial society.
