AN APPROACH TO MECHANICAL PRODUCT CONCEPT DESIGN USING AI TECHNIQUE

Mechanical product concept design is complex and ill-structured. A complex mechanical system can be hierarchically decomposed into some simple sub-systems, with each sub-system designed differently. All solutions to sub-problems can be combined to produce an overall solution. TDES is a design-type expert system based on dynamic plan. It makes design plan use task information and task solving knowledge, and solves sub-problems using domain knowledge. This paper discusses the general design process of mechanical system and the characteristics of concept design. Based on the discussion, the approach to mechanical system concept d'esign used by TDES is introduced in detail.
