The Empirical Test for the Hypothesis of the Difference between Public and Private Sectors Resulted from Resource-Specific Strength of Social Ties

LV Tao;School of Sociology,Shenyang Normal University;
Which one is more useful for status attainment,strong social tie or the week one? The previous theory of social capital,based on the proposition of the strength of social resource,either emphasizes the correlation between the strength of ties and their linked structural positions,or stresses social exchange different from economic one,so that there has been some theoretical dilemma in the proposition of the strength of ties. This thesis focuses the conditional causal process of the sources and returns of social capital. Taking into account the resource-specific strength of social ties,the positive effect on the probability of job attainment in public sectors by influence-specific strong ties increases as the levels of actor's human capital arise,the positive effect on the probability of job attainment in private sectors by information-specific week ties increases with the levels of actor's human capital. Using a representative sample data of social change in 1997 in China's Taiwan region,after controlling for the selection bias of using ties,the analyses based on Heckman-Probit Model provides supporting evidences for the above hypothesis.
