Efficacy and safety of quetiapine augmentation of antidepressants on depression

Objective: To explore the effects of quetiapine augmentation of antidepressants on depression.Methods: 60 patients with depression were assigned randomly to either of the two groups: quetiapine plus ongoing antidepressant or antidepressant alone.They were estimated with HAMD,HAMA,and TESS at baseline and every one week subsequently.The study lasted for 4 weeks.Results:There were significant difference in the scores of HAMD and HAMA between the two groups since one week after the treatment(P0.01).83.3% is responded to the augmented treatment while 50% to the mono-therapy,quetiapine augmentation produced greater improvement than antidepressant mono-therapy(p0.01).The total incidence rate of side effect(by case) of combining-treatment was 43.3%,one patient quit the research because of lower limbs oedema after took 50mg qutiapine.Conclusion:Quetiapine may be a useful and safe adjunct to antidepressant on depression.
