Seeds Properties of Cinnamomum camphora and their Response towards Environmental Factors

By studying the phenotypic traits of Cinnamomum camphora seeds from different provenances,their morphological characteristics,mutation degree,and mutation pattern were revealed systematically. Seeds collected from 164 C. camphora trees located in 41 provenances from seven provinces,such as Jiangxi,Sichuan,and so on were studied,their 10 phenotypic traits including length,width,height,pericarp thickness,length-width ratio,length-height ratio,width-height ratio,volume,weight( per thousand seeds),and density were measured,then a systematic analysis was performed applying variance analysis,principal contents analysis,correlation analysis,etc.The results indicate that there is a very significant difference( P 0.01) between the phenotypic traits of seeds from different provinces,different cities,or even just different trees.Seeds from different provinces have different sizes and degrees of mutation; the main factors changing seeds properties are the length,width,height,volume,and weight( per thousand seeds); growing environments have certain degrees of impact on seeds properties,among which longitude has the largest impact,followed by altitude,while latitude and soil thickness have relatively little impact; different seed properties also have different responses towards growing environments,seed density is very sensitive to the changes in growing environments,followed by weight( per thousand seeds),width,pericarp thickness,length-height ratio,and width-height ratio,while seed length,height,volume,and length-width ratio are insensitive towards growing environments.Seeds properties are important phenotypic characteristics of C. camphora trees from different provenances.Seeds are usually smaller if they are from west China,bigger from central-north China,and medium from South China; seed length,width,height,volume,and weight( per thousand seeds) are the main factors,which change seeds properties; seed tend to have less density as the altitude grows; from west China to east China,seed density and weight( per thousand seeds) grows; thicker soil usually results in taller seeds.
